Maintains and cleans equipment checking that equipment is working properly; reports problems to supervisor.
Performs routine EKGs on assigned nursing units and responds to stat requests as necessary.
Assures EKG tracings are appropriately labeled and checks quality of tracing before giving to cardiologist for interpretation.
Inspects the phlebotomy cart for expiration, and adequate supply and also fills in the daily inspection checklist before using the cart at the beginning or whenever the cart is used the first time in that shift.
Assures proper patient identification by checking the patient’s ID wristband with the requisition slips. Follow correct patient identification through out the processing.
Draws the blood from patients and brings the blood specimens to the appropriate laboratory section.
Properly labels all the blood specimens collected in the presence of the patient writes the test requested in a logbook, and files the paperwork as required.
Records phlebotomy requisitions on appropriate log sheets (STAT, OP, etc.). Assures complete patient identification on the requisitions including the diagnosis.
Assist laboratory techs in receiving dropped off specimen in Paragon.
Centrifuge specimen appropriately according to the instructions.Maintains the outpatient phlebotomy room in a sanitary condition, free of floor clutter and fully stocked of phlebotomy supplies.
Maintains the phlebotomy supply room in a sanitary condition and free of floor clutter. Stock the shelves in a manner that older supplies get used first.
Responsible for the safety of the pager and handheld equipment assigned to each phlebotomist even when not in use by storing in assigned lockers and not in the phlebotomy cart.
Labels the sharp collectors, prepares them for discard when ¾ full and brings them down to the Central Service department for disposal.
Collects the medical waste from the various laboratory sections; labels, weighs and logs them as required.
Stores the phlebotomy cart according to the numerical arrangement in the assigned storage room at the end of the shift.
Answer phone calls received in the laboratory.
Receive all drop-off specimens in timely manner
Place specimen tubes in the centrifuge while processing in Paragon.
Deliver STAT specimens to the processing area alerting Med tech.

Education:
High school graduate or equivalent.
Certification:EKG certification preferred.(Phlebotomist training required for EKG/Phlebotomist position).
Certification or competency from previous employer as a Phlebotomist.
Experience:
One year of EKG and Phlebotomy experience preferred

Manual Dexterity.
Ability to plan and utilize time management skills.
Computer literate.
Good organizational skills.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Good interpersonal skills.
Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position.
JOB SETTING/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Works in well-lighted, temperature controlled patient-treatment areas.
Requires standing for long periods; the noise level is usually moderate.
Work is fast paced.
Subject to shift rotation.
Subject to exposure to bloodborne pathogens, dust, fumes, odors, mists, gasses, biological, mechanical, electrical, chemical and other hazardous materials.
The incumbent is expected to adhere to the Hospital’s Drug and Smoke Free work environment and to adhere to OSHA mandates and precautionary measures.
Occasional prolonged standing/walking; occasional bending, stooping, reaching, etc.
