JOB DUTIES
1 Receives and prepares specimen for testing, disposal, and shipping.
2 Evaluates specimens to determine suitability for testing.
3 Performs venous and capillary blood draw for the laboratory testing from the hospital in- and out-patients.
4 Demonstrates excellent phlebotomy skills.
5 Follows all policies and procedures associated with specimens and patients identification.
6 Assists supervisor to provide technical instructions and training of new hired personnel in techniques, computer system usage, and organization of work.
7 Participates in the departmental meetings as needed.
8 Recognizes and resolves processing errors/discrepancies or problems and notifies appropriate personnel.
9 Evaluates specimens and test orders for acceptability and determines rejections according to established guidelines; accessions specimens with accuracy.
10 Labels specimens properly, aliquots samples as required and obtains/distributes to proper departmental section.
11 Reviews pending logs and investigates/resolves outstanding specimen issues.
12 Reviews quantities and expiration dates of all supplies; monitors inventory of all supplies on a regular basis; notify supervisor to order supplies as needed; stores supplies received and maintains a clean and orderly storeroom.
13 Prepares specimens for reference labs; obtains results from reference labs as needed and ensures the testing results delivered to physicians.
14 Performs all activities related to send-out specimens; resolves issues with reference labs.
15 Performs data entry, test orders, and operates the computer programs associated with testing.
16 Performs excellent internal and external customers communications.
17 Demonstrates knowledge in all procedures performed in the assigned department section.
18 Investigates and documents laboratory problems related to specimens collection and receipt using the appropriate system (forms, computer), as necessary.
19 Participates in continuing education programs and training/retraining as necessary.
EDUCATION + EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or equivalent education required.
Health care certification (i.e.Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Veterinary Assistant, Lab Assistant, Phlebotomist) or priorlaboratory or healthcare experience desired.
Excellent phlebotomy skills required.
CREDENTIALS + QUALIFICATIONS:
Degrees from foreign institutions will require credential equivalency evaluation.
Ability to provide excellent customer service internally and externally.
Possess superior written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to read, understand and follow detailed procedures, Analytical, numerical and reasoning abilities necessary.
Ability to prioritize, organize, and handle a high volume workload efficiently essential.
